In the latest episode of “Cover Your Assets,” we were excited to welcome our friend Marnie Maton, a marketing executive and author of “Vote for You: Take Your Seat at the Table.” Marnie bravely shares her divorce story, including self-care tips, how to find a “divorce mentor,” how to identify your nonnegotiables, and more.
It all started a few years ago when Marnie reached out to me for help preparing for her divorce. As Marnie calls it, that “step before the first step,” where she did a little prep work before actually filing, had an extraordinary impact on not only her self confidence, but also the speed with which her divorce was finalized.
When it came to self care, Marnie found that the simple act of waking up earlier and spending 15 minutes in meditation on love and compassion for herself and others changed her perspective dramatically. On top of that, she takes care of herself by getting 10,000 steps per day and attending divorce support groups.

Marnie also shares her top lessons learned looking back, chief among which is being flexible. Going into her divorce, one of her nonnegotiables was keeping the house. She soon discovered how important that was to her former spouse as well, and she opened herself up to the option of letting it go. Before long, she found a place within a mile of her old house, got a puppy and plugged into a new community. While it hurt at the time, it turned into an amazing opportunity.
We also discuss the importance of mentors, both in your personal and professional lives. Marnie refers to me as her “divorce mentor,” and talks about how mentors have dramatically improved her professional life as well.
If you’re considering or in the midst of a divorce, Marnie’s story is a great reminder of the fact that, while it may seem hard now, everything will work out eventually!
